Because some seniors have dietary restrictions, CAN generally purchases food items directly. Monetary donations allow us to select appropriate groceries and supplies based on each recipient’s needs.

Do you have eligibility criteria for seniors to receive support?

Accepted Answer

Eligibility depends on the program, location, available resources, and the nature of the request. CAN primarily serves adults age 62 and older, veterans, people with disabilities, and low- to moderate-income individuals and households. Housing-related assistance may be limited to qualifying low- to moderate-income households or properties. Families requesting cancer-related support may be asked to provide confirmation of treatment from the attending physician. Please contact CAN so we can review the specific need.

Yes. CAN helpers volunteer during CAN HELP! BAG® packing events, Compassion On The Move mobile food pantry distribution days, food-pallet pickups, sorting, storage, and other community outreach activities. Visit our Get Involved page for current opportunities.

CAN serves communities and nursing homes in northern Virginia, including Woodbridge, Fairfax, and Alexandria; southeastern Virginia, including Hampton Roads; northeastern North Carolina, including Currituck, Elizabeth City, and Hertford; the South Carolina Lowcountry, including Charleston and Moncks Corner; and South Florida, including Plantation and Miami Lakes. Programs and availability vary by location, so please contact us to confirm service in your area.

Yes. CAN provides special CAN HELP! BAG® distributions during Thanksgiving and operates the CAN Christmas initiative. We also offer one-to-one compassionate connection and food-support programs throughout the year to help reduce senior isolation and food insecurity. Is Compassion Advocacy Network a church?

No. Compassion Advocacy Network is not a church. CAN is a community development organization recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a Section 501(c)(3) public charity.

How much of your funds power your actual programs?

Accepted Answer

CAN uses donations to support its charitable programs and the operations required to deliver them. Because program and operating costs vary from year to year, CAN does not promise a fixed percentage. Current financial information is available through our publicly posted Form 990.
